Total engineering for the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee at Camp New Amsterdam

For its National Tactical Command headquarters, the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee commissioned the construction of an office complex at Camp New Amsterdam in Huis ter Heide. Witteveen+Bos was responsible for the total engineering: architecture, construction, installation technology, building physics and project management. The design of the energy-efficient building prioritises a healthy atmosphere as well as flexibility to allow for future adaptations.

Sustainable design and healthy atmosphere

Witteveen+Bos created a sustainable design based on the effective use of space, compact building volume, and the introduction of innovative climate installations. The energy required has been significantly reduced through the use of triple glazing, good insulation, and a very energy-efficient and effective climate system. Two large interior gardens form the basis of the main structure and contribute to an attractive, healthy working environment for the users. By integrating the interior gardens effectively, the surrounding areas also receive optimal sunlight.

Flexible floor plan for range of purposes

The design effectively takes into account the wishes and requirements of various user groups and purposes, the complex being home to several brigades and serving not only as an office. Some 14,000 m² of office space is spread over two buildings in which various brigades are housed. There are also changing rooms, interview rooms, cells, a high-security storage area, and several meeting spaces (such as a canteen and lecture hall).

In order to manage the various traffic flows of employees, visitors, detainees and lawyers, we provided an appropriate layout complete with walking routes and security measures. Thanks to a future-proof design and a flexible floor plan, employees are optimally accommodated. The design also includes the capacity for future adjustments both in terms of the complex’s size and its spatial layout.
