Innovation

New technological developments are succeeding each other at an ever-faster rate. The latest trend is probably the Internet of Things (IoT). IoT connects both household appliances and industrial equipment to the internet. Every year, millions of new appliances are connected, causing the volume of data available worldwide to grow rapidly. We can see these developments reflected in our design assignments.

At Witteveen+Bos, innovation is predominantly seen in our projects. We quickly find ways to apply new possibilities, such as Virtual Reality, robotisation and machine learning, to the solutions we develop for the assignments we work on. Our clients are entitled to expect that we have state-of-the-art technology at our disposal and will come up with novel solutions. However, for us, innovation is not necessarily focused on inventions but rather on quickly and creatively identifying innovative applications of existing technologies. Witteveen+Bos like to do business with a creative mind.

Innovation programme

Everyone at Witteveen+Bos is able to fulfil their dreams and ambitions. We encourage entrepreneurship and innovation, not only in projects but also via a special innovation programme. The methods of tech start-ups and the software industry were a source of inspiration for the programme and has already resulted in a number of innovative solutions. 3D Concrete Printing

Witteveen+Bos is working worldwide on pioneering projects where we are pressing ahead on concrete printing. The world’s first 3D-printed cycling bridge was erected in the Dutch town of Gemert in 2017. The bridge rolled out of the printer at Eindhoven University of Technology. Witteveen+Bos is one of the partners at the university in research into printing sustainable concrete structures. The initial results are highly promising: 3D concrete printing requires fewer building materials and no formwork. This translates into reduced consumption of scarce raw materials, less waste and lower CO₂ emissions.

Digitalisation enables faster and better construction with greater formability. Ultimately, the entire construction process will undergo significant change as a result of the new technological possibilities. In Singapore, we are taking the next step by developing a system to enable building cranes to operate automatically. We contribute to Industry 4.0 in several areas by being able to create comprehensive designs using Building Information Modelling (BIM), we use digital construction solutions including 3D printers, and we apply sensors to obtain data for the purpose of improving designs.

Sustainable innovation is not something we do alone. We collaborate with universities and partners worldwide to develop the best solutions for present-day challenges.
