The Ghana-Netherlands WASH Programme (GNWP) 

The Ghana Netherlands WASH Programme focuses on the realisation of integrated urban water and sanitation facilities in five major municipalities in Ghana. Poor hygienic conditions, insufficient access to facilities and a lack of maintenance of the available facilities are a health risk for the inhabitants.

Witteveen+Bos worked with consultancy firm Berenschot and the Dutch NGO Simavi to implement these facilities. The WASH programme is an initiative of the Ghanaian and Dutch governments.

The consortium built toilet facilities at 100 schools in Accra and in the Cape Coast area. In addition, the project gave 140,000 inhabitants access to clean drinking water. Behavioural change activities were also carried out in the field of water, sanitation and hygiene.

In cooperation with the municipalities involved, master plans have been developed for public facilities in the field of drinking water, wastewater, surface water and solid waste processing. An inventory has been made of the current state of affairs and what needs to change has been identified. A list of concrete projects has been composed to this end.

Witteveen+Bos drew up the designs and tender documents for the identified infrastructural projects and contributed to the development of the master plans. Within the plans, the capacity of the water supply, sewerage and sanitary infrastructure has been addressed.
